March of Dimes Celebrates Annual Signature Chefs Auction

The March of Dimes, Western New York Division presents the 2010 Signature Chefs Auction, “Feathers & Flair, A March of Dimes Monte Carlo Affair” on Friday, October 8 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel. Western New York’s finest chefs will offer their signature dishes coupled with wine tastings from regional wineries and accompanied by an array of unique live and silent auction items and entertainment. Everyone is invited to attend the evening, which raises money and awareness to save babies from prematurity, birth defects and infant mortality.

This year’s event promises to be an elegant night with some of the best restaurants in town. Featured dishes will be prepared by Alex’s Place, Blue Buffalo, Chef’s Restaurant, Fiamma Steak House, Harry’s Harbour Place Grille, Koi, La Scala, My Tomato Pie, Protocol Restaurant and Rich Renaissance Catering. Wine selections will be offered by Merritt Estate Winery.

Erie County Electronics Recycling Day

TONAWANDA, NY-- On Saturday, September 18th, Erie County is hosting an electronic recycling day. You will be able to dispose of unwanted electronics in an environmentally-friendly way.

Accepted Items include:

  •  Computers, monitors, terminals, network equipment, keyboards, mice, other accessories, vcrs/DVD players, fax machines, circuit boards, video game systems, batteries, universal power supplies, and televisions

The drop-off site is on Vulcan Street betwee Niagara St./River Rd. & Kenmore Ave. There is a $5.00 charge.

Student Artists Honored at First Community Based Board of Education Meeting

The Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District Board of Education honored 14 student artists for their “outstanding artistic accomplishment of having an original work of art grace the pages of the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District’s 2010-2011 calendar” during the first community-based meeting that was held in a district school building. 

In effort to increase parental involvement and bring public meetings closer to the Ken-Ton community, the Board of Education voted to hold more than half its meetings this year in schools across the district.  The first community based meeting was held at Hoover Elementary School, located at 199 Thorncliff Road in Tonawanda.

Friends of Upbeat Local Celebrity Count on the Good Nature of Western New Yorkers and Fans At-Large to Help Fight ALS

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. - Musicians, outdoor and animal enthusiasts, family members, church, and local media work together to present a benefit event for Joel Thomas, and his fight against ALS, on Sunday, September 19, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the American Legion Stephen Sikora Post, 950 Payne Avenue in North Tonawanda, N.Y.

Musician, sportsman, author, raconteur, and radio/TV celebrity Joel Thomas is well-known throughout the Buffalo and Western New York area. What most Western New Yorker’s don’t know is that Joel is currently fighting Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” There's one thing about Joel that we all share in common: He's always been there for us. Now he could use our help.

Unwanted Drug Drop -Off

TONAWANDA, NY-- An unwanted pharmaceutical drop-off is scheduled for Saturday, September 25th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Locations include:    

  • Kemore Mercy Hospital, 2950 Elmwood Avenue, Kenmore in the rear parking lot
  • American Red Cross, 768 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, at the corner of Delaware and Summer
  • Villiage of East AUrora Public Works Barn, Pine Street extension by Sinking Pond
  • Hamburg Fairgrounds, 5820 South Park Avenue, enter at South Park Ave entrance

The medication must be in the original labeled container. All medications are accepted, including controlled, expired, unusable, syringes, and over-the-counter medicines.

Chambers' of Commerce Announce Joint Networking Event

 AMHERST, NY- The Amherst, Grand Island, Ken-Ton and Tonawanda Chambers' of Commerce are pleased to announce a joint networking event for their members.  Emedia Studios will sponsor a "Northtowns Networking Night" at their video production facility at 233 Fillmore Ave., Suite 8 in Tonawanda, NY 14150 on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm.  This event is free to members of the Amherst, Grand Island, Ken-Ton and Tonawanda Chambers' of Commerce.

City of Tonawanda Police Investigate Pedestrian Accident

TONAWANDA, NY--  City of Tonawanda Police are investigating a pedestrian accident that seriously injured a Tonawanda man.

Investigators say Peter Drumsta, 86, was struck by a car while he was trying to cross Broad Street just after 6pm Friday evening.

Drumsta was taken to ECMC by ambulance and is currently in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle, James Vanschoonhoven of Tonawanda, was not hurt.  

So far, no charges have been placed at this time.  Police are still investigating.
