KanJam Championship Saturday to Benefit Carly's Club

NORTH TONAWANDA, NY-- The 21st annual KanJam world championship will kick off on August 14, and will benefit Carly's Club.

The day-long competition will take place on the picnic grounds of the Gratwick Fire Hose Company and will pit nearly 400 of the best Frisbee players from across the country against eachother as they team up to vie for the championship title.

All proceeds from this year's competition will benefit Carly's Club for Kids and Cancer Research as well as the North Tonawanda Police Athletic League. Carly's Club provides support programs to make life more manageable for WNY children diagnosed with cancer.

The championship games will be held rain or shine, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. All are invited to attend.

190 Southbound to 290 Eastbound Closed Aug 16 & 17

TONAWANDA, NY-- The NYSDOT has announced the 190 southbound to the 290 eastbound will be closed to all traffic on Monday, August 16 and Tuesday, August 17 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

A detour will be posted directing traffic down the 190 southbound to Exit 15, Sheridan Drive, and proceed along the 290 eastbound to Grand Island Boulevard.

 

Jury Finds Ohio Man Guilty in Tonawanda Homicide

BUFFALO, NY-After close to two full days of deliberations, a State Supreme Court jury has found an Ohio man guilty of manslaughter in the death of a Tonawanda man last summer.

Jose Latorre was convicted for the shooting death of 25-year-old Michael Santiago. Santiago was walking down Burns Avenue when he was hit from behind.

No sentencing date was set.

Ken-Ton School District to Host Transportation Open House

The Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Transportation Department will hold a school bus orientation and open house for families on Saturday August 28th, 2010 from 10:00 am to 1:00 PM at Transportation Department headquarters located at 1680 Military Road (just north of Sheridan Drive).  While the event is geared towards Kindergarten students, students of all ages and grade levels can attend the free event with their families.  Law enforcement officials will provide “stranger danger” workshops. 

Bus drivers and aides will show students and their parents important information on how to enter, exit, and ride on buses.  Children will learn safety tips on where danger areas and blind spots are when exiting buses, the proper way to cross, and the proper way to ride on buses.

N. Tonawanda Fire Sends 3 Firemen to Hospital

N. TONAWANDA, NY - North Tonawanda Fire Department was called to Robinson Road in N. Tonawanda around  6:30 p.m. Wednesday, sending 3 firemen to the hospital.

An apartment building had a fire in two of the apartments, the lower level apartment was occupied at the time. Fire rescue was able to get them out and made sure the rest of the building was empty.

3 firemen from the North Tonawanda Fire Department were transported to Degraff Memorial Hospital, two with minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

New Principals Appointed at Ken-Ton Schools

Newly appointed Benjamin Franklin Middle School Principal Kevin Kruger feels right at home heading back to his roots at the middle school level.  The former music teacher has taught and worked at all three building levels: elementary, middle and high school.  Kruger spent seven years as a music teacher at the elementary level and four-and-a-half years at the middle school level.  Most recently he served the past four-and-a-half years as Assistant Principal at Kenmore West High School.  Now Kruger has been named Principal at Benjamin Franklin Middle School, a move he feels comfortable with and excited about.

Veterans Memorial Expansion Planned in Tonawanda

TONAWANDA, NY -- The town of Tonawanda Youth, Parks, and Recreation Department will celebrate the expansion of the Veterans Memorial at Kenny Field.

The celebration will take place on Wednesday, August 18 at 11 a.m.

Councilman and Chairman of the Parks Department, Dan Crangle says the expansion will allow for an additional 2000 names on the memorial itself. 

Names will be engraved twice per year, and submission deadlines are August 21 and February 21. There is a $100 charge for each name engraved.
