Shop for the Animals at the Buffalo Zoo

BUFFALO, NY-The Buffalo Zoo needs you to help make sure they have enough to stock their pantries throughout the upcoming fall and winter seasons.

"Shop for the Animals" will take place at participating Tops locations on Saturday, August 21st.

Here's how it works-a copy of the Zoo's grocery "wish list" will be provided at the store and you're asked to pick up an item or two on the list while doing your own shopping. Shoppers will be albe to leave their gift with a Zoo volunteer in the store lobby.

All of the donations will be used as special treats to promote the animals' natural behaviors and to stimulate them both mentally and physically.

Some of the items on the list include: Kellogg's Apple Jacks and Fruit Loops, all sizes of dog biscuits, extracts and spices, peanut butter and rawhide chews.

Niagara Falls Blvd Access Ramp Closed Aug 5

The access ramp from southbound US Route 62 (Niagara Falls Boulevard) to eastbound Interstate 290, will be closed to all traffic beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, and reopen at 7 a.m. the following morning.

Traffic will be directed to follow a posted detour on Niagara Falls Boulevard to Sheridan Drive, then proceed east on Sheridan Drive towards Millersport Highway.

The ramp is being closed to repair a bridge on the 290. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the week.


I-290 Lane Restrictions Wednesday and Thursday

TONAWANDA-There will be lane restrictions on the I-290 East and Westbound on Wednesday, August 4 and Thursday, August 5.

They'll take place between Exit 2 (Colvin Boulevard) and the I-190 in the Town of Tonawanda from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

According to NITTEC, traffic impact will be minimal.

Ken-Ton Summer Music Concert

TONAWANDA, NY-Bring your blankets and lawn chairs for a free concert Thursday by the 400 students who took part in the  Ken-Ton School district's Summer Music Camp. 

The concert will take place on the lawn of Kenmore East High School on Fries Road on Thursday, August 5th at 6 PM. Over the course of the past weeks, the students have taken part in three different summer sections: band, orchestra, and choral programs.

If the weather doesn't cooperate, the event will be moved indoors.

Brighton Field Days Kick Off This Week

Featuring rides, games and refreshments, the Brighton Field Days will return this year on Aug. 5, 6 and 7.

The Brighton Fire Company is trying to bring back "the good old days" with rides, games and refreshments, along with many other special events.

Local restaurants LaHacienda, Mineo and Sapio, and Captain Mike's will provide food, including pizza, Italian sausage and seafood, as well as Krowlick's chicken barbecue.

The event will feature live entertainment from the Frank Grizanti Band on Thursday night, Hit-n-Run on Friday, and the Todd Eberwine Band on Saturday.

A firefighter's parade will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, beginning at Hamilton Elementary School, 44 Westfall Drive, and dispersing at the Brighton Fire Company on Jamaica Road.

NT Councilmember Addresses Allegations of Wrongdoing

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. - The North Tonawanda council member who's daughter was given a rare DWI plea deal, spoke to the people she represents, Tuesday night at a regular council meeting.

Nancy Donovan, mother of 23-year-old Sara Donovan, spoke for just more than a minute about alleged involvement in a DWI plea deal.  The Donovan daughter was arrested July 9th for hitting two parked cars and driving while intoxicated.

Since then, Donovan retained Henry Wojtaszek, the former Niagara County Republican party chairman who asked the Republican Niagara County district attorney Michael Violante for Donovan's DWI charge to be lowered to two traffic violations.

Donovan's statement is as follows:

"I've prepared a statement in regards to recent events that I'm sure you've all read about.  Ummm, there's been much publicity lately in regards to the DWI arrest and subsequent plea of my daughter Sara in North Tonawanda.

AARP/Walgreens Offers Health Screenings and Services

The AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour is on the second leg of its two-year national health screening tour with the goal of providing more than $60 million worth of free health screenings in more than 3,000 communities across the nation.

Health workers perform a battery tests which check: total cholesterol level, blood pressure, bone density, glucose levels waist circumference and body mass index. The value of the services is estimated at $140 but are presented free.

The Wellness Tour rolls in to Walgreens locations at 2601 Sheridan Dr., Tonawanda on Thursday, July 29, noon-7 p.m.; 650 Delware Ave., Buffalo on Friday, July 30, noon-7 p.m.; and 5275 Transit Road, Clarence on Saturday, July 31, noon-7 p.m.
