Celebrate Holiday Traditions at the Beautifully Decorated and Historic Eldon House

The Buffalo area is truly blessed to have such a large number of architecturally significant buildings. The same can be said for nearby London, Ontario, where buildings such as the historic Eldon House have become major tourism attractions.

Eldon House, which recently celebrated its 175th anniversary, remains virtually unchanged since the last century. Known as Ontario’s oldest residence, it contains family heirlooms, furnishings and priceless treasures and also boasts a beautiful 19th century-style garden. Built in 1834 for John and Amelia Harris, this historic home remained in the family until 1960 when it was donated to the City of London. The house and its gardens remain a place of beauty and tranquility.

And today, the beautifully decorated Eldon House is celebrating the holiday season with a number of festive event. Victorian Christmas is being celebrated through January 1, 2011. Visitors can enjoy the sights and scents of the Victorian Christmas tradition and experience beautiful holiday decorations of the past. A special Christmas exhibition of family artifacts is also on display upstairs.

Also taking place this holiday season is “Christmas at Eldon House.” In this Victorian Christmas play, the rooms of Eldon House come to life with members of the Harris family and their servants as they prepare for their holiday celebrations.

A New Year’s Day Levee is planned from 1 to 4 p.m. January 1. Guests can celebrate the New Year by visiting Eldon House and enjoying musical entertainment in the elegant drawing room. Hot cider and treats will also be served.

Eldon House is located at 481 Ridout St. in London. For additional information, visit www.eldonhouse.ca or call (519) 661-0333. For helpful information on planning a quick getaway to London, please visit www.londontourism.ca.
