The Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Transportation Department will hold a school bus orientation and open house for families on Saturday August 28th, 2010 from 10:00 am to 1:00 PM at Transportation Department headquarters located at 1680 Military Road (just north of Sheridan Drive).  While the event is geared towards Kindergarten students, students of all ages and grade levels can attend the free event with their families.  Law enforcement officials will provide “stranger danger” workshops.

Bus drivers and aides will show students and their parents important information on how to enter, exit, and ride on buses.  Children will learn safety tips on where danger areas and blind spots are when exiting buses, the proper way to cross, and the proper way to ride on buses.

“Coming to our open house where students will learn important information that will keep then safe in and around buses, is the most important thing parents can do before the start of the school year,” said Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Transportation Supervisor John O’Connor.

Refreshments, snacks, and food will be available for families who attend the Transportation Department’s bus orientation and open house.

The Transportation Department has also posted important applications for families in the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District on the homepage of the district’s website: www.kenton.k12.ny.us.

Applications for students who request transportation and attend private schools outside the district are on the website, as well as the application for students who need transportation to after-school daycare programs.  Parents are strongly encouraged to return the after school daycare applications to the district no later than Wednesday August 18th, 2010.

In order to be eligible for after school daycare transportation, the student must be transported five days a week, there is a scheduled stop on a bus route serving the student’s school, there is room on the bus, and the student is eligible for transportation from his/her home address.
