Schools

The combined Girls Varsity “Kenmore Hockey” team comprised of 17 student-athletes from Kenmore East and Kenmore West High Schools unveiled their new uniforms for their inaugural 2010-2011 season.  The combination of colors: white, navy blue, royal blue, and athletic yellow, represent the two Ken-Ton high schools who have joined forces to create the “Kenmore Hockey” team.

The Kenmore West High School “Blue Devil” will appear on the right shoulder of the jersey while the Kenmore East High School “Bulldog” will appear on the left shoulder of the jersey.  The “Stahls Varsity” font is used for jersey numbers.  The front of the jersey bears the combined team name in cursive: “Kenmore Hockey.”

“We are very excited to begin this historic season of girls varsity hockey in our district.  This is a wonderful opportunity for young women to compete in a sport that they are passionate to participate in.  The uniforms are first-class, and we look forward to our student athletes putting them on for the inaugural game in December,” said Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District Director of Athletics Brett Banker.

The combined “Kenmore Hockey” team will compete in the Western New York Girls Varsity Hockey Federation that includes seven teams: Kenmore, Lancaster, Monsignor Martin, Orchard Park-Frontier, Sweet Home-Amherst, West Seneca, and Williamsville.  The “Kenmore Hockey” team’s season begins on Monday December 6th, 2010 at 5:30 PM with a road game against West Seneca.  The home opener takes place the following night on Tuesday December 7th, 2010 at 8:00 PM at Lincoln Arena, where all home games will be played.

“I cannot wait for the first puck to drop and the games begin.  All student athletes, whether they are male or female, deserve the same opportunities to compete in the sport or competition they love.  I applaud the dedicated parents and student athletes who have worked so hard to make the dream of playing girls varsity hockey in Western New York a reality,” said Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Union Free School District Superintendent Mark P. Mondanaro.

Jeff Orlowski, a current Kenmore East High School Mathematics teacher, will coach the “Kenmore Hockey” team.  Kenmore East graduate and former Buffalo State College player Jamie Overbeck will serve as an Assistant Coach.  Most recently Overbeck served as the volunteer assistant coach for the women’s ice hockey team at Buffalo State College.

“To say we’re thrilled to start the season of girls varsity high school hockey would be a huge understatement.  We are making history by fielding the first girls varsity hockey teams in Western New York.  No longer is girls ice hockey considered a club sport.  Our games will be competitive and I encourage hockey fans from across our region to come out and support our teams,” said Orlowski.

A total of 18 regular season games will take place between early December and mid-February 2011.  Playoff games will take place in late February with the league championship taking place on March 1st, 2010.
