Miles for Megan Benefits New Mother with Leukemia

When Megan Smith began going into labor, her mind was on little else than delivering her child. But a routine blood test revealed an abnormality that altered things. “When it was about time for the epidural, the doctors did a CBC and found some abnormalities in the white blood count,” said her husband Ryan. “Instead of a normal 5-10k, it was around 40k.”

Megan was able to hold her baby, named Rylee Hannah, for a few minutes before they rushed her to Roswell Park Cancer Instititute in an ambulance. She was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and has been undergoing treatment ever since. In a matter of 2 months, she has undergone 2 rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.

To assist with the mounting medical bills, members of Megan’s church, friends, family and co-workers have organized a fundraising walk. “Miles for Megan” will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 9. Walkers will meet at the Friendship House, Ellicott Creek Park at the corner of Creekside Dr & Irvington Dr, Tonawanda. The walk will take place regardless of weather.
Registration is $10 per walker. Walkers are asked to collect pledges as well. There will be a silent auction and basket raffles. Lunch and t-shirts will be provided for walkers. Non-walkers who wish to participate in the raffle and auctions will pay a $5 cover fee. Snacks will be available to them, and lunch is available for purchase.

Event organizers are also seeking volunteers for the event to set up and to staff the rest stop stations along the walk. They continue to accept silent auction and door prize donations, and corporate sponsorships.
