Money for Tonawanda Island Rehab

Ed Alkiewicz, director of Relicensing and Implementation for the New York Power Authority (NYPA), recently presented a check for $330,985 from the Greenway Ecological Fund to Julie Barrett O’Neill, executive director, Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper.

The money will be used by the Niagara Riverkeeper to improve the habitat on Tonawanda Island, returning the area to a more natural state.

Under the commitments made in conjunction with its Niagara Power Project operating license, NYPA pledged to contribute a total of $450 million for Greenway development over the period of the project’s 50-year license.  As part of that agreement, NYPA provides the Greenway Ecological Fund with $1 million annually.
