Revolutionary War Returns to Old Fort Niagara
Events, Families

The American Revolution returns to Old Fort Niagara and American and British forces are vying for your support. Old Fort Niagara hosts a Revolutionary War Encampment on October 9 & 10.

Beginning at 10am both days, Revolutionary War re-enactors will portray both British and American forces, offering musket and artillery demonstrations throughout the day. At 1pm each day, kids and their parents will be recruited for a mock battle by either the Patriots or the British forces.

New this year, Old Fort Niagara hosts a special lantern night tour of the historic site and military camps Saturday evening at 7pm. In addition to seeing an 18th century encampment within the Fort, participants will be guided by a costumed soldier and learn about the history of Old Fort Niagara and the role it played at this critical time in the nation’s history. The program also includes an in-depth discussion about uniforms and equipment used on a daily basis by soldiers during the American Revolution. Tickets for this special tour are $15 and available by advance registration by calling the Fort at 745-7611. Those who purchase tickets for the evening tour can also visit the Fort during the day as well free of charge.

The British held the post at Fort Niagara throughout the American Revolution, enabling the Crown to hold the Great Lakes and serve as a base for frontier raids from New Jersey to Kentucky. It was also a place of refuge for those Americans who remained loyal to King George.

Old Fort Niagara is also holding interactive educational programs for 4th and 7th grade students on Friday, October 8th to illustrate what life was like on the New York frontier in the 1770s. The program is scheduled from 9:30am – 1:00pm and includes presentations, musket demonstrations and infantry exercises. Teachers should register by calling the Fort at least two weeks in advance.

Admission to Old Fort Niagara is $10 for adults and $6 for children ages 6-12. For more information, visit www.oldfortniagara.org or call 745-7611.
