Tonwanda Skate Park Gets Pepsi Refresh Grant
News

TONAWANDA, NY (WGRZ) -- The Pepsi Refresh Project has awarded the Gregory G. Holler Memorial Fund a $5,000 grant toward a skate park project in the City of Tonawanda.

For months, the Holler family has worked to raise $150,000 needed to build new ramps.  They are motivated by the memory of their loved one who died suddenly.  Gregory Hayes Holler loved skateboarding at the skate park.

Don Holler, Greg's Father explains, "He was the type of kid who would take someone under their wing if they needed it.  He would allow any bullying around him.  If he saw it he would do something about it. He wouldn't just walk away."

Kari Holler, Greg's sister says, "We're still keeping his memory alive and I know that just seeing the kids, I see a little bit of him in everyone.  So, it helps to come here.  I like to think that he's helping them a little bit."

"The Tonawanda skate park will not only be a great way to honor the memory of Gregory Holler, but it will provide a safe place for the young people of Tonawanda to skate and bike," said Michael Adams, Regional Sales Director of the Upstate New York market unit of Pepsi Beverages Company.  "The skate park will be a refreshing addition to the Ives Park complex and the Tonawanda community, and we at Pepsi Beverages Company are proud to be a part of its construction."

Voters to the skate park's Pepsi Refresh page agreed that the GGH memorial fund idea was a compelling one.  The park will not only serve the youth of Tonawanda, but many teen skaters had a hand in its design, expressing their ideas for the elements the park should include.  Upon its completion, the park will be free to the public.

The Pepsi Refresh Project is an evolution of the Refresh Everything initiative Pepsi launched in 2009, which showed the brand as a catalyst for optimism.  In 2010, Pepsi is funding ideas that will move the world forward in six categories: Health, Arts & Culture, Food & Shelter, The Planet, Neighborhoods and Education.  The Pepsi Refresh Project will feature significant social engagement around people and the power of ideas.

To implement the project, Pepsi has partnered with three organizations dedicated to making a positive difference in the world: GOOD, a leading platform for thought and action revolving around pushing the world forward; Global Giving, an online marketplace that connects people who have community and world-changing ideas with people who can support them; and Do Something, the largest non-profit teen charity.

Efforts to raise money for the Tonawanda project will continue.  A benefit is scheduled for next month.  It's on Sunday, Spetember 12th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Tonawanda Volunteer Firemen's Park at 318 Two Mile Creek Road.  Tickets are $20 and include dinner prepared by J.J. Richert of Torches Restaurant.  The hope it that this benefit will push them over the edge to break groung in the fall.
