History of the Golden Globes

The Golden Globes are put on by the HFA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s) a non-profit organization that donates millions to entertainment-related charities, scholarships and other programs that assist towards the future of film and TV. The Golden Globes were started in 1940’s and it wasn’t until the 1950’s when the Golden Globes began to honor TV achievements. Currently the Golden Globes recognize achievements in 25 categories, 14 in motion pictures and 11 in television. Dick Clark productions have produced the Golden Globes ceremony since 1983.

Each year the member of HFPA sees and reports on more than 300 films, interviews more 400 actors, directors, writers and producers. Members also attend film festivals in other countries in order to seek out interesting and innovative foreign language films and establish cultural bonds with directors, actors, jurors and fellow journalists around the world. Meetings are held monthly and the organization has officers and directors that are accredited by the Motion Picture Association of America. Only five journalists in the world are allowed membership.

The nominations are announced in December with the telecast taking place in January. The press not only covers the nominations but the best or worst fashion list as well. Designers dream of having their gowns on this red carpet event.
