Carrousel Chat: “Kiddielands: An Adult Perspective”

Speaker: Katie Loveless, Museum Educator, Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum

In the early 20th century amusement rides faced growing competition from other forms of recreation. With the onset of the Great Depression, consumers had fewer dollars to spend on leisure entertainments. Many amusement operators shut down, and those that remained had to innovate or perish. The Allan Herschell Company survived largely through the innovative new “Kiddieland” concept, which not only saved the company but also revitalized the industry. Learn more about this fascinating story, and also the state of Kiddielands today.

As a special part of this program, the Carrousel Museum would like to see some of your photos! The museum is currently developing a new interactive exhibit on the history of Kiddielands which will include four operational rides. The rides in the museum’s collection operated at Page’s Whistle Pig restaurant in Niagara Falls. If you have photos of you or your family at Page’s we would love to include them in the upcoming exhibit. Simply bring your photos to the program; we’ll scan them and return the original to you; we can even email you the digital copy. Be a part of history!
