Gold Laced Coat event at Old Fort Niagara

The Friends of the Youngstown Free Library and Old Fort Niagara are collaborating on an exciting new series of programs for children, ages 8 to 12, and their families who are interested in learning about the history of our region. The four-part series will bring to life four characters from “The Gold-Laced Coat,” by Helen Fuller Orton, a classic 1934 novel for children that tells the story of young people at Fort Niagara during the French and Indian War. Each program will include an activity and craft related to the featured character. Each participating child will also receive a copy of “The Gold-Laced Coat.”

On Wednesday evenings, March 30 and April 6, 13 and 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Old Fort Niagara’s staff of talented storytellers and re-enactors will create living history in the Red Brick Gym, located at 240 Lockport Street (Rt. 93) in Youngstown. Following an interactive talk and activity, the children will make a craft. Kids who attend three out of the four programs will be invited as VIPs to Old Fort Niagara’s French Garrison event on Saturday, April 30.

The series’ four programs are planned as follows:

March 30 - Beavers and Broadcloth, passing around items from the fur trade, making a trader’s sash;

April 6 - Neighbors and Allies, learning Native American songs and dances, making a corn husk doll; and

April 13 - Pockets and Petticoats, playing an 18th century game, making an 18th century girl’s pocket.

April 27 - Flintlock and Tomahawk, doing a 1755 infantry exercise with wooden muskets, making an 18th century French soldier’s hat;

A one-time donation of $5 per child to help cover the cost of the book and craft supplies would be appreciated, but is not necessary for participation. The series is open to all children, regardless of where they live or go to school. Space is limited, so please call 745-3555 to register.
