Kenmore Mercy Hospital Earns Third Consecutive Gold Seal of Approval® in Knee and Hip Replacement

Kenmore Mercy Hospital is pleased to announce that its Knee & Hip Center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval® from The Joint Commission as a certified center of excellence. There are no other certified joint replacement centers within a 75-mile radius of the Buffalo area.

One of 19 Hospitals in the State to Receive this Award

As Catholic Health’s Orthopedic Campus of Excellence, Kenmore Mercy is one of only 19 hospitals in New York State to receive this quality certification in both knee and hip replacements.

To achieve these certifications, Kenmore Mercy’s total joint replacement programs underwent a rigorous, voluntary, on-site review in October that looked at all aspects of care including patient education, leadership, and medication management.

“Receiving The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for our Knee & Hip Center demonstrates the skill and commitment of our team of orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing and rehabilitation staff, and many others extend to our patients," said Marcus Romanowski, chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Kenmore Mercy Hospital. “This is just another example of how Kenmore Mercy Hospital strives to provide the highest quality care, in a state-of-the-art environment with excellent clinical outcomes.”

Only Hospital in WNY to Earn Dual Certification

Preparing for certification is a demanding process and Kenmore Mercy Hospital is the first and only hospital in Western New York to earn this dual distinction since it was first certified in 2011.

“It’s a two-year journey to earn total knee and hip Joint Commission certification,” said Laura Verbanic, the hospital’s director of Quality & Patient Safety.

The Joint Commission’s site survey commended Kenmore Mercy’s knee and hip joint replacement programs in a number of areas, including:

  • The hospital’s interdisciplinary team approach s collaborate to provide the best care to the patients.
  • Its comprehensive associate education program, which prepares both clinical and non-clinical staff on how to care for orthopedic patients. This has been recommended for The Joint Commission’s leading practice library.

The coordination of care before, during and after surgery ensures that orthopedic patients at Kenmore Mercy receive the most efficient and comprehensive care available. Patients also benefit from onsite pre-surgical education and testing, the support of orthopedic certified nurses, and a dedicated Knee & Hip Center with all private rooms to enhance comfort and recovery.
