Firefighters were called to an apartment building at 2079 Whitehaven Road just after 6am.
Grand Island Assistant Fire Chief Chris Soluri tells 2 On Your Side that when firefighters arrived on scene, they found heavy fire conditions in the apartment.
There are seven units in the complex. The fire was contained to the one apartment.
An 18-year-old male was in the apartment at the time of the fire. He was taken by ambulance to ECMC with minor injuries.
A family dog died in the fire.
Officials say the teen told them the fire started in the living room.
Damage is estimated at $105,000. Investigators believe the cause of the fire was due to careless use of a lit candle in the living room.
