Rainbow, Whirlpool, and Lewiston-Queenston Bridge Crossings to Begin Accepting E-ZPass® Toll Payment

Today the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission (NFBC) announced that implementation of the E-ZPass tolling program will take effect at the Rainbow, Whirlpool, and Lewiston-Queenston international bridge spans as of August 11, 2014.  The new E-ZPass program will supplement existing ExpressPass, Commercial ExpressPass, and pre-loaded NEXUS/Toll card offerings currently available to motorists.

 

“After a very successful period of program testing and coordination, the commission is prepared to launch the E-ZPass program at all of our bridge crossings early next month,” said Niagara Falls Bridge Commission General Manager Lew Holloway. “We expect a smooth introduction of the program and believe this additional tolling feature will provide yet another convenient tool for motorists.”

Whirlpool-Rapids Bridge Inspection Lane Construction to Result in Canada-Bound Traffic Closure

LEWISTON, NY – Today the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission (NFBC) announced the upcoming installation of a second primary inspection lane within the Canada plaza at the Whirlpool-Rapids International Bridge crossing. This construction project—scheduled to commence on September 2nd, 2014, and conclude on or before October 9th, 2014—is being undertaken to increase processing capacity at the crossing. The Whirlpool-Rapids Bridge has recently experienced rapid increases in usage and wait times, due to the growing popularity of the NEXUS trusted travel program.

Water Rescue near Olcott, NY

Olcott, NY- On July 3, 2014 at approximately 2157 hrs, a 911 wireless call was received by the Niagara County 911 Communications Center from a male reporting that his boat was sinking on Lake Ontario. The boat, a 20 foot 1987 Sport Craft was occupied by six passengers at the time of the call. Emergency Dispatchers from the 911 Center were able to verify the location of the source through technology and directed nearby patrols to the location of the sinking boat. Moments later at 2200 hrs, a road patrol unit was able to locate the sinking boat approximately 150 feet off shore directly north of 5595 West Bluff.  A spotlight was used to keep a visual on the sinking boat and all six occupants until a Niagara County Sheriff's Marine Unit arrived in a successful rescue. As the last of six occupants were assisted from the distressed boat, it was completely submerged by water and capsized.

Royalton, NY: On 7/5/14,Niagara County Sheriff's
Office received an emergency 911 call from the Royalton Airport reporting a
small aircraft crashed near the runway directly after takeoff. The light-sport
aircraft was located approximately one hundred fifty yards south of the paved
runway in very thick foliage. The male pilot was trapped in the damaged cockpit
and had to be extricated by medical/fire personnel.
