Olcott, NY- On July 3, 2014 at approximately 2157 hrs, a 911 wireless call was received by the Niagara County 911 Communications Center from a male reporting that his boat was sinking on Lake Ontario. The boat, a 20 foot 1987 Sport Craft was occupied by six passengers at the time of the call. Emergency Dispatchers from the 911 Center were able to verify the location of the source through technology and directed nearby patrols to the location of the sinking boat. Moments later at 2200 hrs, a road patrol unit was able to locate the sinking boat approximately 150 feet off shore directly north of 5595 West Bluff.  A spotlight was used to keep a visual on the sinking boat and all six occupants until a Niagara County Sheriff's Marine Unit arrived in a successful rescue. As the last of six occupants were assisted from the distressed boat, it was completely submerged by water and capsized.

Royalton, NY: On 7/5/14,Niagara County Sheriff's
Office received an emergency 911 call from the Royalton Airport reporting a
small aircraft crashed near the runway directly after takeoff. The light-sport
aircraft was located approximately one hundred fifty yards south of the paved
runway in very thick foliage. The male pilot was trapped in the damaged cockpit
and had to be extricated by medical/fire personnel.

With backyard parties, cookouts and fireworks, the July 4th holiday is a favorite time of year for many Americans. But the celebrating can turn deadly when people drive after drinking alcohol.  

“Impaired driving can turn celebrations into tragedy in an instant,” said Monica Farrar, director of The Resource Training Center Drinking Driver Program. “With July 4th approaching, we’re reminding people of the cost of impaired driving. In 2012, 179 people were killed in crashes over this holiday period. Of those deaths, 44 percent were in crashes that involved alcohol.

Toronto: Completion of paving work on Lake Shore Boulevard West

The road paving work on Lake Shore Boulevard West from Yonge Street to Windermere Avenue has been completed ahead of schedule.

The paving portion of the work was originally expected to be completed in mid-July, however, as a result of good weather and efforts by the City and the contractor to accelerate the project, the work was substantially completed on Saturday, June 21.  

"This investment will improve the quality of Lake Shore Boulevard," said Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong (Ward 34, Don Valley East), Chair of the City's Public Works and Infrastructure Committee.

Steer It - Clear It! Campaign On in Toronto

The City of Toronto in conjunction with Toronto Police Service have launched the Steer It Clear It initiative to encourage motorists who have been involved in a minor collision to move their vehicle from the roadway's travel lanes.

Steer It Clear It signs have been posted along the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway. If a vehicle involved in an accident can still be driven, the driver should move it to a safe area such as the shoulder to reduce the chances of a secondary collision.

Niagara Falls Bridge Commission Introduces E-ZPass® Toll Program at Rainbow, Whirlpool, and Lewiston

The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission (NFBC) has announced the upcoming introduction of the E-ZPass program at the Rainbow, Whirlpool, and Lewiston-Queenston international bridge spans. This popular electronic toll payment option will supplement the existing ExpressPass, Commercial ExpressPass, and NEXUS/Toll card offerings currently available to motorists at the Commission’s three Canadian-American border crossings. The NFBC will begin accepting E-ZPass toll payments in the late summer of 2014.
