Miles for Megan Benefits New Mother with Leukemia

When Megan Smith began going into labor, her mind was on little else than delivering her child. But a routine blood test revealed an abnormality that altered things. “When it was about time for the epidural, the doctors did a CBC and found some abnormalities in the white blood count,” said her husband Ryan. “Instead of a normal 5-10k, it was around 40k.”

Megan was able to hold her baby, named Rylee Hannah, for a few minutes before they rushed her to Roswell Park Cancer Instititute in an ambulance. She was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and has been undergoing treatment ever since. In a matter of 2 months, she has undergone 2 rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.

Chiari affects over 300,000 people in the US. Chiari is a serious neurological disorder in which the brain herniates out of the skull and puts pressure on the nerves and spinal cord causing debilitating pain and life-threatening symptoms.

The walk is a series of walks in different cities taking place on the same day to bring awareness and raise money for research.
